Observations

Toured up Carlton Ridge, down to Carlton Lake, and up to peak 9096 (just north of Lolo Peak). Encountered low density snow up the Carlton Ridge skin track to approx 7000’, where high winds created wind skins and wind slabs. Encountered wind affected snow the remainder of the tour except in sheltered areas with dense tree cover.

Advanced Observations

Observed Avalanche Problem #1: 
Wind Slab
Comments: 
Widespread wind slab and wind skin formation above approx 7000’ at all aspects in the Carlton Ridge Area. Observed blowing snow on ridges, peaks, and areas without tree protection (burn scars). Wind slabs were between half an inch and 5 inches thick and quite sensitive. Observed collapsing and shooting cracks propagating approx 50 feet.
