The West Central Montana Avalanche Foundation was formed in 2001 to bridge the gap between the funding available from the U.S. Forest Service and the expenses required to operate the West Central Montana Avalanche Center. Today, it raises over two-thirds of the avalanche center’s operating budget, provides the website Missoulaavalanche.org, delivers high-quality avalanche education, and connects backcountry travelers to essential resources for staying safe in avalanche terrain. Through your support, we provide these valuable services to the people that live, work, and play in west central Montana.

Did you know that, unlike most Avalanche Centers, all of our Forecasters are employed through the nonprofit the West Central Montana Avalanche Foundation? As non Forest Service employees, this creates unique challenges as we strive to provide a growing user base with the best possible forecast products we can. At the same time, it offers an opportunity for you, the backcountry recreationist, to directly impact your community by helping us expand avalanche center operations!
Our goal is simple: raise money to increase the number of avalanche forecasts until you have full-week coverage! This year, we took the first step by expanding the avalanche center to include a third forecaster. With your help, we can start planning for regular Sunday forecasts and continue working towards daily forecasts!
