Observation Date: 03/29/2020
Route/Location:
Touring around Gash Proper and the South Bowl of gash provided a lot of changing snow conditions and problems on various aspects and elevations. We skied from the false summit of gash proper and the “wind lip” line as well. We then moved onto the south bowl and skied the bowl to lookers right of the usual S Bowl uptrack.
Weather:
Sunny with not a lot of wind in the morning and then snowing heavily starting around 4pm.
Wind:
Obvious signs of previous snow transport the past couple days during the small storm cycles.
New Snow: 0-3″
Avalanche Activity:
On the “wind lip” run off of the false summit of Gash Proper there were 2 major collapses and one propagation but no slide released. These were on a NE aspect around 8200ft on a wind loaded slope.
We decided to take a look at the steep chute below the lookers right bowl of Gash Point. On the second turn in 37* terrain the skier triggered a slide that propagated first around 30ft wide and then spread to around 50-70 feet wide, depth was from inches to a foot deep. They were able to ski away from the slide’s path and were not carried.
