Event Description

Are you curious about what goes into preparing for a safe and enjoyable day in the mountains? Ever wondered how National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast complex mountain conditions?

This engaging Mountain Weather Workshop offers a behind-the-scenes look at how weather forecasts are built, how to interpret mountain-specific weather information, and how to apply that knowledge when planning backcountry trips.

Join us for an informative evening with NWS meteorologists who will walk through the fundamentals of mountain weather, key forecast tools, and freely available online resources you can use to make better decisions before heading out.

Whether you’re new to backcountry travel or a seasoned professional, this workshop will help you better understand the weather patterns that influence snowpack, travel conditions, and safety in mountainous terrain.

Topics Covered

  • Mountain weather systems and how they influence conditions on the ground
  • Wind, precipitation, and severe weather in complex terrain
  • Key observations and weather signals to watch for in the backcountry
  • How to read and apply mountain and backcountry weather forecasts
  • Online tools and resources for trip planning and preparation
  • What to expect from this winter’s weather patterns
  • Next steps and additional resources to continue building your weather knowledge
