Observation Date: 01/18/2015

Route/Location:
Dug pit on north – northeast slope. Skied a southwest slope.

Weather:
Driving wind and snow most of the day. Temp dropped from above to below freezing during the day.

Wind:
Sideways.

New Snow: 3-6″

Avalanche Activity:
Several soft slab pockets on adjacent steep slopes ran naturally about 25cm deep. Nothing audible.

Other Comments:
Dug a pit on a northeast leeward protected slope. Found old hoar layer about 25 cm down below the new snow. Extended column test fully propagated on the 25cm layer on 3rd tap from wrist. No bueno. Another old hoar layer about 50cm down fully propagated on 25 (5th wack from shoulder). Even though our planned route was fairly treed it was just a bit steeper than comfortable, so we abandoned and meadow skipped on a lower angle slope.
