Observation Date: 02/16/2019

Route/Location:
Up Morrell mountain from the Cottonwood lakes road and Swamp creek on the West. Skied a pair of west facing tree runs, and one short run to the East.

Weather:

Wind:

New Snow: 3-6″

Avalanche Activity:
We found a reactive buried weak layer on Morrell mountain in the Swans today on all aspects and elevations above 6,000 feet. We dug a pit at 7,300 feet on both a N. and S. aspect, and had failures at ECTP11 on both aspects. We found a thin buried facet layer, which I believe was the culprit. We were also getting a lot of collapsing on this layer on all aspects above 6,000 feet. We ended up having to scale our plans way back and ski terrain not steep enough to slide.
