Observation Date: 01/20/2020
Route/Location:
Skookum Butte/Lily Lake
Weather:
Overcast, 37 degrees @ 1300. Moderate winds under 10 MPH. Slight precipitation (rain) began around 1400 hours.
Wind:
Very little wind, less than 10 MPH.
New Snow: No New Snow
Avalanche Activity:
No active whomping or cracks. Snow density was moderater in the AM and increased with the sun and very light rain in the afternoon to solid “snowball-making” snow. Saturday was a cloudless, sunny day, resulting in lots of trees shedding loaded snow. South and west-facing slopes showed increasing stability. Our party decided to avoid ridge line slopes over 25 degrees due to concerns about the deep persistent layers and suspected rock outcroppings serving as potential trigger points.
